Penryn
U12s 49 Pirates U12s 14
2nd November, 2008
The Pirates U12s travelled
to Penryn with just 13 players, the shortage because many of their regulars players
were unavailable because of half-term commitments.
With several players
playing out of their more regular positions, they were always having to work hard
to contain a well-drilled and determined home side, and it was perhaps no surprise
that the Pirates never really gelled in such a challenging encounter against a
team that has improved considerably over the last couple of years.
Having
conceded an early try, the Pirates showed determination, but were perhaps lacking
the understanding in key areas that has been developed in earlier games.
The
Pirates changed ends 21 - 7 down, their try coming from a charge down by Connor
Bick, with Jake Carley quick to touch down the ball that had bounced back over
the Penryn line.
When Penryn scored an early second half try, it seriously
deflated the Pirates spirit. However, the visitors then managed to respond to
put together some strong breaks, and after a penalty was awarded close to the
Penryn line, Reuben Mzera crashed over for the Pirates second try.
Pirates
scorers - tries: Jake Carley, Reuben Mzera; cons: Max Berryman (2).

On a dry, but cold and windy Sunday morning, both sets of backs were
evenly matched. However, at scrum time, and also in defence, the Pirates had the
edge, which were the factors that laid a platform for this fine win.
In
fairness, it must be mentioned that the Penryn squad was a little short on players,
with there also a sporting response shown by 'Pirate' Ben Ellis, who commendably
volunteered to play for the hosts.
