Club History - The Pirates Ladies

The Pirates Ladies

Throughout our history we have been well served by wives, mothers, girlfriends and all ladies in general.

Some have given unique service in senior office, whilst others have helped in a variety of ways such as providing after-match meals, arrange buffet receptions, mending shirts, holding coffee mornings, car boot sales, being stall holders at fetes and generally responding to offer support whenever or wherever required.

At the very beginning we had a lady President, Mavis Lawry, who held the office for an amazing twenty-one years. She was the epitome of all a President should be, enhancing the prestige of the Pirates in so many ways.

Mrs. Porritt was another legendary fund-raiser, and it was she, along with Effie Kent, who instigated the first Ladies Committee which began to function in 1952-53.

Other ladies who have given outstanding service over many years at periods during our history have included Eileen Luke, Mary Hoare, Betty James, Carole Ladner, Maureen Tonkin, Eve James, Marie Westren, Lillian Richards, Margaret Ashcroft, Thelma Hoare, Betty Parkerwood, Sally Westren, Ann Jeffery and Ann Tucker.

Examples of dedication are too many to list, but there were times when sacks of potatoes were peeled by hand to provide chips with meals.

Also, in 1988 our kitchen ladies were £900 in credit, and this after they themselves covered the cost of some 2,200 after-match meals provided in the season. Unbelievable!

Nowadays, for a number of reasons, there are fewer ladies directly involved. However, to those that do assist in whatever way, your presence and help is most appreciated.
