Joe Bearman.Cornish Pirates director Martin Hudson, on behalf of Dicky Evans, presented The Presidents Cup to Joe Bearman.

He stated it was a just reward to someone who had arrived as a boy and quickly grew into man in his nine years at the club, him being an inspirational player in each and every step taken up the league ladder.

Mr. Hudson also thanked all the volunteers who made match days possible at Kenwyn, the supporters who have followed the team, and finally Jim McKay and the players on what they had achieved.

26/04/06 Cowley Signs New Deal

TIM Cowley believes a bright future lies ahead for the Cornish Pirates and he wants to be part of it after signing a new deal with the club.

The Kiwi forward yesterday became the latest Pirate to commit his future to the club for next season - and the news has been warmly welcomed by his coach, Jim McKay.

The Australian said: "Having Tim on board again next season is great news for us. He's a great player and a real leader out on the pitch for us.

"He offers the team a great deal when he plays and his versatility is obviously a great asset to us."

tim cowleyThe 30-year-old - who has made 15 appearances this season, scoring two tries - was signed by McKay's predecessor, Kevin Moseley, at the start of the 2004/05 season from Manchester.

His all-action displays have won his many admirers not only in the Duchy, but across the rugby fraternity.

Cowley himself is delighted to have pledged his immediate future to the Pirates. He said: "The season has gone very well and we've been able to finish third, which is a great achievement.

Having a few injuries was a bit disappointing, but I've played in some really good games of rugby.

"The Exeter away game at the start of the season was pretty memorable and so was Otley away. We went up there as underdogs, but we really dug in and didn't allow ourselves to take any backward steps."

Cowley was last night jetting home to New Zealand for an end-of-season break, but he admitted he was looking forward to coming back to Cornwall.

"It's a great place," he said. "The support for rugby down there is a bit like home. Before - when I was at Manchester - that was a football city, but in Cornwall everyone is always talking about rugby."

Reds Stars Sign For Pirates

Lewis Vinnicombe & Sam Heard Sign

In a joint statement from both the Cornish Pirates and Redruth, it has been confirmed that two of Redruths bright young stars have signed contracts which will see them become Cornish Pirates in the close season.

It is considered that both wing Lewis Vinnicombe and prop Sam Heard have the potential to play at a higher level, and although they will be missed at the Recreation ground, they leave with Redruths blessing.

Team manager David Penberthy stated that their club was very proud of the two players, expecting that they would improve still further as full-time professionals, especially with the Cornish Pirates with whom there has been a good working relationship in the past couple of seasons.

Both players joined the Reds in their mid-teens, progressing through their Colts set-up and then the first team, playing over 100 games since making their senior debuts in 2002.

Lewis Vinnicombe is 21 years of age, a striding winger who is a prolific try-scorer. Indeed, his super effort lit up the Cornwall K.O. Cup Final against Launceston at a dull Camborne on Wednesday evening, and although Redruth went down 15-10, it was his fifth try in three games against the Cornish All Blacks this season, one during which the Cornish flyer has also played for the England Counties XV.

Tight-head prop Heard provides a massive presence, the 22-years-old Cornwall-capped forward tipping the scales at twenty stones. He is an able scrummager whose handling skills enable him to also be an effective ball-carrier.

With confirmation that there will be eleven Academy players involved with the Cornish Pirates next season, general manager Peter Richmond expressed delight on behalf of the National 1 outfit that two more Cornish boys had been taken on board.

Adams Buzzing Off To The Wasps

Nick AdamsIt has been confirmed that Nick Adams, who joined the Pirates from Nottingham in 2003, will be leaving the club at the end of the season.

The 18 stones, 28 years old tight-head prop forward - who has also experienced playing in South Africa and France - has signed a 2-year deal with Premiership outfit Wasps, an exciting challenge that he is very much looking forward to.

Forwards coach at the Wasps, former All Black tight-head Craig Dowd, sees Nick as a destructive scrummager who is also mobile, their aim being to take this good prop and develop him into a really excellent one.

During his time with the Pirates, there is no doubt that Nick has proved himself to be one of the best tight-head prop forwards in National 1, him playing an important foundation role in helping the Pirates to perform well in the league. We wish him well.

Fishermen's Memorial Fundraiser

Cornish Fishermens XV 5 - Pirates Plunderers 19
Mennaye Field Easter Saturday 15/04/06

As part of a wide range of fund-raising activites to help provide a Newlyn Memorial to Fishermen lost at sea, the Mennaye Field was the venue last Saturday for a charity rugby match between a Cornwall Fishermens XV and the Pirates Plunderers.

The response from people to play in the game was excellent, members of the rugby and fishing fraternities keen to do their bit, with the hope that by next year a large bronze statue of a young fisherman will be erected in Newlyn to represent all fishermen lost at sea from all harbours in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.

The fund has now raised £20,000 in total, leaving £30,000 still to be found, the opportunity being taken to remind people that donations can be forwarded to Shirley Stevenson, c/o., the RNMDSF Mission at Newlyn, or to any branch of Barclays Bank.

Pirates Give Future Stars Their Chance

The Cornish Pirates are making a clear statement to aspiring young rugby players in Cornwall that there is a chance to stay in the Duchy and develop their game.

Sam Betty, Adam Nicholls, Simon Peters and Owen Hambly - who have all had the benefit of training with the Cornish Pirates this season as Academy players - will be be joined next season by seven more of Cornwalls potential best.

They are all members of the SWERA (South West of England Rugby Academy) who attend Truro College. They recently made a mighty mark on the game by convincingly beating holders Filton College (Bristol) 37-0 in the final of the British Colleges Cup competition.

It is felt that if talent such as this can be nurtured and kept in the county for the next few years, then it would increase the chance of these players making it to the top, and hopefully with the Cornish Pirates.

The players gifted the opportunity are:-

academy players

L-R;
Gareth Tedstone, Lewis Webb, Darren Dawiduik, Scott Hobson, Mike Rawlings
Sam Parsons, Mike Provis

  • Gareth Tedstone a loose-head prop forward from Penryn who played for England U18s last season.

  • Lewis Webb a scrum-half from Penryn, who also has a scholarship at Exeter University.

  • Darren Dawiduik from the Truro club, a hooker who has also been an inspirational leader of the successful Truro College side.

  • Scott Hobson a mighty prospect who has already played in the second-row for Redruth, England 18 Group, and the England U19s side.

  • Mike Rawlings a wing-forward who hs represented SW England Schools.

  • Sam Parsons a promising centre from Truro.

  • Mike Provis a fly-half and prolific points scorer with the boot who played for England 16 Groups A side.

A considered must is for the players to start playing senior rugby at a level which practically suits them & be loaned to certain clubs around the Duchy if not directly involved in the Cornish Pirates 1st. team squad.

They will also have Academy matches to play, with a number of games expected to take place under floodlights at the Mennaye Field in 2006-07.

Looking after the Cornish Pirates Academy youngsters will be the experienced Robin Cowling, the SWERA Manager at Truro College, who in his playing days was a Leicester and England prop forward.

McAtee Inspirational For Wales 7s

On a weekend when England won the Hong Kong Sevens by beating Fiji 26-24 in a heart-racing final, Wales provided further evidence that they have much to offer the tournament by beating Kenya 15-5 in the final of the Plate competition.

The Welsh side had to pick themselves up after being narrowly beaten 21-17 by South Africa in the main competition, with Cornish Pirate Rhodri McAtee being an inspirational member of their team. Rhodri scored the first of Wales three tries against Kenya, with his effort being a prompt response to one from none other Benjamin Ayimba. Benjamin and Oscar Osir, who have been members of the Cornish Pirates this past season and who were loaned out to Redruth, were again competing for Kenya.

The next round of the IRB Sevens is in Singapore this coming weekend, followed by a penultimate event in Paris 27-28th. May, and the eighth and final tournament at Twickenham on 3-4th. June.

Pirates sign Duncan Bell from Newbury

Following the recent announcement that two new faces, former Wales U21s scrum-half Rhodri Wells from the Ospreys and utility back James Moore from Coventry (the top points scorer in National 1), are expected to join the Cornish Pirates for next season, it has been confirmed that a third newcomer, Duncan Bell from Newbury, is to follow them.

The 26-years-old Kiwi Samoan has been a star performer for the Blues, an exciting centre who was prominent in Newburys promotion from National 2, and one who has been at the hub of their creative rugby played in National 1 this season.

Duncan, who is a good distributor of the ball, has power and pace, his representative honours including having played for the New Zealand Army, the New Zealand Youth Squad, and the Chiefs Super 12 Development team.
